Deaf Community

We provide interpreters for weekly Mass to deaf members of the community at one Mass.  In the past we had to switch back and forth between 4:00 p.m. Saturday and 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass for winter and summer and depending on the availability of Catholic interpreters.

As of June 2018 we have arranged for us to return to the Sunday 9:00 a.m. Mass. Deaf persons are encouraged to sit near the interpreter on the right hand side section near the statue of the Blessed Mother holding the Child Jesus. The interpreter position is at the base of the steps and you will have a good view of the interpreter, the priest, readers and others serving during the Mass.

Our interpreters in the past have been Chris (Christine) and Karen.  We have added Stephanie to our team. For Sunday, you will mostly see Karen and Stephanie. Since Chris regularly interprets the Mass for the Cathedral on Sunday morning, she will only substitute for us in the future. We are delighted that they are available to serve and to worship with us.

Interpreters use American Sign Language to interpret the music, prayers of the Mass, Bible readings, homily and announcements.  We have included eight YouTube videos of the sections of the Mass below for all of us to be more familiar with the Holy Mass as it is prayed in Sign Language.

You can connect to our Deaf Community on "Flocknote" to receive newsletters and messages by email and/or text messages. You can set your own preferences and the way you wish to be informed. Sign up to any of the many activity groups or even get inspirational messages (only if you sign up to that group).  We won't send you anything you do not want. You can change your preferences any time you want to join or unsubscribe to groups.
